Whenever the subject of history arises, be it in school or elsewhere, the value of its study is always explained in the same way: we look to history to understand past mistakes, to observe historical trends, and to use those trends to make predictions about the future. With the United States’ recent emergence from a global pandemic, the current volatility of the nation’s political climate, and complaints about the economy becoming fairly common, it is clear that the country is not at its most stable. As candidates begin to announce their bids for the 2024 presidential election, it is important to consider other historical figures who have risen to power during times of instability and, more importantly, to continue to consider this as we begin casting our votes.
