Today, Apple and Samsung are the most well-known smartphone brands consumers will recognize. And with the release of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S22 and iPhone 13, comparing the two could easily land the winner as the best phone on the market. To best compare the two phones, we’ll be using a rating system based on three different topics: functionality, aesthetic, and popularity.
Functionality
As phones continue to improve and be heavily used in our society, consumers are instead putting more emphasis on longevity and quality.
In recent years, Apple has been known as the pioneers of the modern mobile phone, as well as their aesthetic designs and high-definition graphics. With a higher 12MP (megapixel) front camera quality, about 2 hours and 40 minutes longer battery life, and a higher refresh rate compared to their Samsung counterparts, Apple has made major improvements to the newest flagship installment. For functionality, Apple gets an 8.5/10.
While Apple is clearly in the lead in terms of utility in their newest phone, Samsung is also very impressive. The Galaxy S22 has a higher RAM (random access memory), a powerful rear camera quality, a larger battery size, and faster charging speeds. Samsung receives an 8/10.
Aesthetic
Aesthetic and visual appearance of a product is a crucial part of marketing. And when it comes to technology, with every element needing to be useful to support the greater whole, making the final product convenient, powerful, as well as good-looking is the goal of any tech company.
The iPhone 13 has much to offer aesthetic wise, with a larger array of phone colors, larger screen size, and larger storage options going up to 512GB. However, the iPhone 13 earned its spot as one of the best phones in 2022 mainly for its cameras. Compared to the 12, the iPhone 13 has a larger main sensor that helps take in more light. This allows for more ambient lighting and richer values when taking photos. Apple’s aesthetic rating is 8/10.
However, Samsung has been known throughout the years for having some of the best cameras in the industry, long before it was Apple’s main focus. The Galaxy S22 bumped up its main sensor to 50MP compared to Apple’s much weaker 12MP, as well as an ultrawide angle camera providing a much wider field of view. The S22 also includes the newest telephoto lens, which helps create a much higher resolution than the iPhone can currently offer. The S22 also has a higher Delta-E–rating in color accuracy, providing richer colors when watching videos or browsing the internet. Samsung gets a 9/10.
Popularity
Another important part of product marketing is utilizing past popularity or current hype over certain products. Specifically in the US, Apple is by far the most popular smartphone brand. That being said, iPhones are still some of the most expensive phones on the market, but consumers are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for iPhones due to the culture around the brand. While many other phone brands are just as good or even better than certain iPhone models, consumers will flock to the product that’s getting the most attention.
Another reason Apple excels when it comes to consumer interests is their privacy. Unlike Android and Samsung, Apple uses their own App Store and Safari applications instead of the common Google platforms. Apple is able to curate downloadable content to their users, keep passwords and money secure, and using their own web browser means Apple saves a lot of money. For these benefits, Apple receives a 9/10.

On the other hand, Samsung does not include any of these features. Samsung and other Android phones are also not as successful in the US, but very popular in Asia. Additionally, Samsung does not provide the same privacy benefits that Apple does, utilizing Google and Play Store for their flagship models. Due to this, Samsung and other Android companies have been accused of allegedly selling data to third-party providers and offering poor privacy on personal information. Samsung receives a 7/10.
While both phones are high quality and smart purchases, Apple wins with a score of 25.5/30 in a side-by-side comparison with the Samsung Galaxy S22. With its main focus on battery storage and longevity, the iPhone 13 is an impressive new release with the potential to only get better.
