What to wear:
Tis’ the season for school spirit! Spirit week started on Oct. 15 and is packed with events until the 19. This years theme is decades with the Seniors as ’80s, Juniors as ’70s, Sophomores as ’90s and Freshman as ’50s.
Each day the students are required to wear something specific each day to earn points. This year the students kicked off spirit week with Pajama day on Monday, American day Tuesday, Kinnelon day on Wednesday, Dress up day based on your category on Thursday, and class color day on Friday which puts an end to the very exciting week.
Activities throughout the week:
Each day the students take part in new activities. Throughout the week be sure to donate canned goods. Donating non-perishable goods throughout the week will rack up your grades points in the competition. It will not only help those in need but also promote grade unity. Please remember to donate as much as possible as soon as possible.
This is started off on Monday, where freshmen brought in their spirit treats for the teachers. That afternoon, after school, each grade received a certain amount of time to decorate a specific area of the school relating to their theme. Judging of the decorations followed shortly after.
The following day there was a karaoke contest last block and the sophomores spirit treats were due. There will also be a volleyball competition at 7:30 on Tuesday night after school.
Wednesday there was a quiz bowl last block, juniors had their treats due, and the annual dance competition will take place at 7:30.
There will be another one the following night same time and place! The last block on Thursday there will be band day and seniors will have to hand in their spirit treats. There will also be a Penny Wars during lunch by Student Council Bulletin Board. A penny war is a competition where different groups collect coins in. Each group has a bucket for collecting money and tries collecting more money than the other grades to earn more spirit week points.
And finally the last day of Spirit Week: Friday. During the last two blocks, all four grades will compete against each other in several different activities for Color Day. After school, Friday from 2:30-4:30 the banners, for each grade, are created on the second floor in the English wing. Then, clean up hallway decorations afterschool by 3:30. For the final event, there will be the homecoming football game at 7:00 pm for all the students to attend in support of the KHS football team.
Student Opinions on Spirit Week:
Throughout the week, students show their school spirit by supporting their peers at each event. “I love watching the dances each grade has put together because it’s cool watching my friends do cool dances together,” sophomore Zainab Kabir reported. Kabir is very excited to show her school spirit this year. Last year was her first experience of high school spirit week, and she loved the competition and community the school was expressing.
“I’m so looking forward to that week! It’s a nice little break from school and at the same time, it allows students to really come together as a team. It’s a great experience,” junior Kaylene Munem said. She emphasized her experience with spirit week based on the two years she participated in it. All in all, spirit week is creeping up on all of us so make sure to get pumped for the competition this year!
“I am very excited for theme day this year because I think the clothes from the 90s are really cool” sophomore Emma Macmanus could not be more excited to finally be able to have a reason to wear vintage 90s clothes to school. Our decade theme day is a very exciting time and many people are pumped to go ‘back in time’ and see different old trends that week.
“Throughout all my years in high school, my favorite week was always spirit week. This year I am much more excited though since it’s senior season for me! The best part of spirit week for me is definitely band day because we all get to sing and dance like a concert. But the cool part is that you are supporting your peers with it and it’s all different songs. It’s a very cool and fun day so love that” senior Isabella Ospina exclaims about her experience with the fun week. She could not be more enthusiastic about winning this year spirit week with her and her peers enthusiasm and competitiveness
