Although winter break has come and gone, the winter season is far from over. Winter movies are a great option for those who want to appreciate the chilly weather while staying indoors.
Frozen
Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen”, “Frozen” is a family-friendly film that features Anna (Kirsten Bell) and Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) racing to save their kingdom after Anna’s sister, Elsa (Idina Menzel), uses her powers to cause eternal winter. With captivating sing-a-longs and comedic relief from a certain snowman (Josh Gad), it is a light-hearted film that explores deeper themes of love and trust.
Additionally, “Frozen” is a wildly popular film, with an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over 1 million worldwide. Following its success in 2013, Disney released “Frozen II” in 2019, which was also successful at the box office. “Frozen” has also won numerous awards, such as Best Animated Feature Film of the Year. With the snowy kingdom of Arendale and lovable characters, it is a perfect film for all ages to watch during the winter. Watch the film with a Disney+ subscription or on Amazon Prime Video for $3.79.

Little Women
“Little Women”, the novel by Louisa May Alcott, has numerous film adaptations, including “Little Women” (2019), rated PG. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the coming-of-age film centers around four sisters, Jo, Amy, Meg, and Beth March, and their distinct individual dreams. The sisters are played by a star-studded cast, including Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, and Eliza Scanlen, respectively. Although the sisters occasionally fight, the movie centers around family’s importance while exploring gender stereotypes.
The film is set in the snowy winter of Massachusetts and even features an ice skating scene. The snowy scenes and close relationships between characters make “Little Women” a heartwarming film to watch during the winter. Also, the film is highly rated, with a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It has been nominated for many awards, such as Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is available to watch on Hulu, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video.
Eight Below
“Eight Below,” based on a true story, is a PG film about Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) and his eight sled dogs. After an accident at the Antarctic base camp, Shepard is forced to leave his beloved dogs behind in treacherous weather conditions. The movie follows the dogs’ struggles to survive the Antarctic winter alone.
“Eight Below” has a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and won an ASCAP Award for Top Box Office Films. Set in the snowy landscape of Antarctica, “Eight Below” is a great movie to watch when it is too cold to go outside, and rooting for the survival of the dogs is an emotional journey. Stream the film on Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video.
While winter movies usually contain snow, there are many more “nontraditional” movies to watch during the winter time. The most important part is to enjoy the film.
