About the Host
Nikki Glaser is known primarily for her work as a comedian for the past two decades. She is also regarded as a TV host on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and the “2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted.” She is popular for executing cunning remarks during celebrity roasts, appearing on Netflix in The Roast of Tom Brady and Comedy Central for The Roast Of Alec Baldwin and The Roast of Bruce Willis.
There was uncertainty about how the jokes would flow at this ceremony because the previous host, Jo Koy, faced much backlash for his performance, including a superficial comment on the Barbie movie that completely disregarded the film’s message. The last performance was unsuccessful largely due to improper planning and Koy’s poor fit for the role. Conversely, Glaser amused the audience with her jokes even in an unfamiliar setting and handling topics diverging from her norm. She managed the role professionally, making jokes that occasionally pushed the line but roused a positive reaction.
History of the Award Ceremony
From 1943 to 2023, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) ran the Golden Globes. The HFPA is a non-profit group of journalists and photographers that was disbanded in 2023 due to its lack of diversity in its 87 members. The organization has also been accused of easily succumbing to bribes in exchange for awards. Additionally, the ethicality of group members was compromised in a report, alleging that members engaged in threats and smear campaigns against journalists. These previous scandals tarnished the reputation of the Golden Globes. As a result, a new voting group emerged with reforms including an increased focus on diversity and restrictions on gifts and travel perks members could receive. The new voting party for the Golden Globes consists of 300 members from 76 countries. Of the 300 voters, 47% are women and 60% are racially and ethnically diverse.
Highlights
Apart from the amusing comedic performance, the award winners also drew viewers’ attention. At this ceremony, Demi Moore made an inspiring speech as she won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for her role in The Substance. This was a particularly special moment for the actress because, despite her extensive acting history, it was her first major acting award. In her speech, Moore references how she has been called a popcorn actress by a producer, causing her to dismiss her achievements and demote her self-image as an actress to this comment. So, this award defied the validity of this comment, proving that her work is impactful and meaningful.
Another important event was Brady Corbet’s acceptance speech on behalf of The Brutalist for Best Dramatic Film. Corbet directed and produced this period drama set in postwar Europe. The film follows an architect’s journey in navigating his life in a new country where a wealthy, influential industrialist discovers his talent. Corbet’s speech included a directed remark stating that “final-cut tiebreak goes to the director,” meaning that a director’s vision should supersede the financier’s if there is a creative difference between the two parties.
