A college bed party is a way for KHS seniors to celebrate their college decisions in a fun and personalized manner. This “event” started as a simple way to celebrate college and has now become a celebration where students get their bed/bedroom decorated with decorations to celebrate the college of their choice.
The bed is usually covered with snacks, merchandise, shoes, dorm decor, etc., related to the senior’s future. A great place where most are shopping this year for decor is Etsy. Friends and family usually create these bed parties for their senior as a surprise to congratulate them.
A lot of seniors look forward to this moment once their senior year comes to an end, and all their stress is relieved. Many seniors reflect on this time by being able to celebrate their decision with their friends and family. “I was genuinely so excited to see what my family and friends had set up for me, and once I saw my college colors, it all just felt so surreal,” said KHS alumnus Melina Lucci.
The trend began to formulate during COVID, as a way for seniors to celebrate their college decision while still working alongside the rules and regulations. Post-pandemic, the tradition has only gotten bigger. Families are averaging hundreds and thousands of dollars of work into these bed parties.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the mother of a high school senior, Laurie Drago, spent between $2,500 and $3,000 on Indiana University paraphernalia. “College-announcement parties, largely limited to teenage girls, have taken on a life of their own. It is obscene. You can go to any extreme.” Drago said.
Bed parties are about recognizing hard work and sending students off with excitement for the next chapter in their lives, while also being surrounded by their loved ones, such as close friends and family. As more KHS seniors post pictures of their bed parties, the tradition continues to grow and inspire underclassmen. Whether the bed party is big or small, the idea of tradition to admire the seniors’ hard work throughout the years is important, as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
