MAKING THE HOLIDAYS BRIGHTER FOR CHILDREN IN NEED: NHS CHRISTMAS SERVICE PROJECT

Lauren Abderhalden, Editor-in-Chief

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in 2010, “There were approximately 400,000 children in foster care in the U.S. of which 36 percent were ages 5 and under.”

While most Kinnelon residents enjoy an abundance of holiday spirit, there are those who are less fortunate. As a result, the National Honor Society (NHS) would like to share holiday cheer to those in foster homes this holiday season.

The Division of Child and Family Services of NJ (DFC) organization helps children and families throughout N.J. NHS has partnered with the DCF, in both the West and East branches of Morris County, and will donate 200 gifts to children in protective services.

Science teacher and NHS adviser Wendy Bruffy says, “I ran NHS at my last district and this was a service project that we did at my past location. Mrs. K [Hope Kowalski] and I feel this is an important cause and one that benefits children who really need our support. We want to thank everyone in advance for their support and help with this project. DCF really appreciates our time and effort with this cause.”

Senior and Executive Council member Colin Graham says, “This is a great way to help someone less fortunate to get exactly what they want for Christmas. I think it’s an amazing program that we should do every year, it shows how much we can truly help people.”

Likewise, senior and member of NHS Deanna Fanelli says, “I think it is a really good opportunity for the students of KHS to show their kindness and selflessness. These gifts might be the only presents the children receive on Christmas, and I am proud to be a part of an organization that wants to help children feel the spirit of the holidays.”

KHS senior and President of NHS, Michelle Solarczyk agrees and says, “It’s been very eye opening because some of the gifts that children asked for are things we take for granted everyday. The whole experience makes everyone a little more grateful for what they have this holiday season.”

More information will be sent out in the KHS newsletter. If you want to get involved, contact Bruffy or Kowalski at [email protected] and [email protected], respectively. Any donations are greatly appreciated.
