In the digital world, a celebrity’s reputation can change in a matter of hours. One post, one video, or one resurfaced clip can spread across social media, causing intense backlash almost immediately. This phenomenon, often referred to as cancel culture, has become a significant aspect of how the public responds to celebrities and influencers.
One reason cancel culture has become so powerful is that social media gives ordinary people a platform to express their opinions. Fans, followers, and critics can all share their views instantly, and these reactions can quickly grow into a larger public movement. In the past, celebrities were mainly judged by news outlets and television coverage, but now platforms like TikTok, X, Instagram, and YouTube allow anyone to participate in public criticism.
Celebrities are often held to a higher standard because their actions are always being watched and discussed. Sophomore Kate Coursen said, “I think celebrities are held to higher standards because they have a lot of influence and people look up to them. Since they are always in the public eye, people expect them to act better than regular people. At the same time, they are still human and make mistakes like everyone else.”
In some situations, cancel culture serves an important purpose by holding celebrities accountable for serious actions. When public figures are accused of harmful, abusive, or exploitative behavior, backlash can bring attention to issues that might have been ignored if it were coming from ordinary people. Many people believe this type of public reaction is justified because celebrities have influence, and their actions can affect millions of fans.
Cases involving major allegations, such as the trial and conviction of Sean “Diddy” Combs, lead the public to speak out. In these situations, cancel culture can be seen as a way for society to demand accountability from powerful people. Sophomore Lauren Mortimer said, “I think the case involving Sean Combs is really serious and should be taken seriously while the truth is figured out. After the allegations came out, a lot of people online turned against him and stopped supporting him.”
In many cases, public reactions can seem exaggerated compared to actual offenses. Many influencers like James Charles have been able to bounce back after being canceled because social media still enjoys their content and forgets why the figure originally got canceled. Coursen said, “James Charles has been canceled multiple times because of accusations about inappropriate conversations online. I think he still keeps followers because he already has a huge fanbase, and some people separate his content from the controversies. Social media also moves on quickly, so people eventually start watching again.”
While its impacts are large, ancel culture does not affect everyone equally. Some celebrities lose sponsorships, followers, and opportunities almost immediately, while others can rebuild their careers and maintain loyal audiences. This difference often depends on factors such as the celebrity’s popularity, the severity of the controversy, the loyalty of their fan base, and how they respond. Mortimer said, “I think influencers should be able to rebuild their careers if they honestly apologize and prove they learned from their mistakes. However, the media does not always forgive easily, which can cause a dent in the influencer’s reputation. Especially if social media is the source of that influencer’s income, they are going to try whatever they can to start making money again after losing most of their following from being canceled.”
Apologies also play a major role in how the public responds to controversy. Some people believe that if a celebrity gives a sincere apology and shows real change, the public should eventually move on. Others believe that certain actions are too serious to be forgiven, no matter what apology is given. Lally said, “Public reactions to celebrity apologies are often influenced less by the apology itself and more by how audiences already feel about the person involved, making forgiveness highly inconsistent. People are often more willing to forgive celebrities they already admire, while being harsher toward those they already dislike.”
Overall, cancel culture has become a powerful part of modern society. Because of the internet, celebrities have to be mindful of what they say, because one wrong word can change their lives. In the end, cancel culture shows how quickly public opinion can shape, and sometimes damage, a person’s reputation.
