Through fundraisers and events, The Cancer Awareness Club, run by KHS teacher Wendy Bruffy, is actively showing how even small communities can make such a big impact in the fight against cancer.

At Kinnelon High School, learning doesn’t just stop in the classrooms. For the members of the Cancer Awareness Club, education is extended through real-world impact on people. These students are exposed to outside issues that they can try to help solve. The students raise money, hold events, and spread awareness through the community.
Organized by Dr. Wendy Bruffy, the club does fundraisers and events to help raise money, support, and awareness. From bagel fundraisers to health fairs, members are constantly trying to help people in need and educate people on this topic. As important as it is to raise money, the main goal of the club is to help people realise how much cancer can really affect communities and families.
Club member Junior Kate Scornavacca said, “It is truly amazing how many people get involved in this cause. When we have events and fundraisers, they are a huge success, and so many people come to support.”
On Feb. 14, there was a bagel fundraiser that sold out before the end of the day. This fundraiser went towards HOSA-HPC. They took both cash and Venmo, so it was easily accessible to everyone.
Club member Junior Lea Albik said, “The bagel fundraiser was a huge success. Dr. Bruffy bought the bagels, and the members brought in butter and cream cheese. By the end of the day, all the food was gone, and we had raised money for a great cause.”
Through both hard work and dedication, the Cancer Awareness Club continues to help people. The club shows how powerful teamwork and leadership can be. With Bruffy’s lead and the members’ time and comparison, the club continues to make an impact both in and outside of the community. By raising awareness and bringing the community together, these students’ little efforts can leave a lasting difference.

Through fundraisers, morning announcements, and events, members of the health care clubs at KHS are helping spread public awareness and support important causes.

At Kinnelon High School, health clubs play a crucial role in educating students and supporting meaningful causes. The clubs offered are Red Cross, HOSA, and Cancer Awareness. The clubs work to keep students informed through school announcements and monthly awareness events and campaigns.
Teacher and club adviser Wendy Bruffy says, “For the cancer awareness club, each month we choose a different cancer to raise funds.”
These monthly focuses not only help students learn about different types of cancer, but also support organizations that fund research and patient care.
Students getting involved is a major part of the club’s success. Bruffy believes that being in these clubs helps members better understand the importance of supporting good causes. Some students are especially passionate when they can personally connect with something.
Bruffy said, “Some get very involved, especially if they have a loved one who has had or is experiencing cancer.”
The club also organizes lots of fundraisers and events throughout the school year. Bruffy says, a lot of repeated ones are: “Bagel sales, bracelets and candy for donations, Karaoke, lemonade stands, Shave your Head for Childhood Cancer.”
Students love to get involved to make an impact. If they are passionate about something, they will make the resources available to learn and better the community. And if members need a little push to get more involved, Bruffy will send lots of messages and information, as well as ask for participation and volunteers. Bruffy was actually inspired to start a lot of these clubs because she was asked by students to create them.
Bruffy says, “One of the things that makes me most proud is when students participate and get involved.”
Beyond just fundraising, the clubs also share a lot of information and sources to educate the students and the rest of the community. Bruffy describes the clubs in three words: “informative, educational, inspiring.”
The ultimate goal of these clubs is to remind students that even small contributions can make a big difference in people’s lives.
Bruffy said, “Every dollar raised goes to a good cause.”
