As the summer air cools off and the sounds of leaves crunch, a shift in music is imminent, with a change in tunes occurring.
At KHS, the change from summer to autumn is clear and is displayed through students’ music, as there is a swap from the summer tunes to chill fall beats.
Students’ music taste often changes throughout the seasons. Each season gets its own demographic of melodies. While music in the spring and summer tends to be upbeat and bright, during the fall and winter, the music is usually more toned down and mellow.
Specifically, fall is a very relaxed season, so trends this fall season mainly include mellow and alternative, with the rise of artists such as The Smiths, and Fleetwood Mac. Many artists have released new albums fairly recently as well, such as Sombr and Sabrina Carpenter.
In addition to the softer styles of music currently trending this fall, there is also a resurgence of jazz music. For example, Laufey is receiving lots of praise and is currently touring with her new album, which blends pop tones with historical jazz.
Similarly, junior Sophia Ankner adjusts her preferences according to each season. “In the fall I like to listen to more calm and alternative music. In the spring and summer, though, I would rather listen to more energetic music. Most times, the music I listen to reminds me of the season.”
In contrast, not every music listener must change their preferences from season to season. Sticking to a certain genre that can be in tune with fall as well as spring is fairly common. Junior Evangeline Philip keeps up with her favorites: “My music taste doesn’t necessarily vary from season to season, but I do listen to some songs to get me in the mood for Christmas!”
Music is subjective, with everyone around listening to something different. This means there is always something that caters the listener. No matter what the current trend is, there are always opportunities to branch out.
