The lights dim, and students clutch their scripts nervously. One drops their prop, and another stumbles over a line, causing the room to burst into laughter. Thankfully, it is not opening night on the auditorium stage- just a regular lesson in KHS’s new theater class.
A new class has been added to the KHS electives category. Run by new teacher Savannah Yates, the class offers unique techniques in the world of theater and the performing arts program.
Last year, KHS surveyed students, asking what types of classes and programs they were interested in. The increased interest in a theater elective, along with the growing after-school drama program, resulted in the creation of the theater class. This class is the first of its kind at KHS, which has a variety of art electives, including ceramics, digital photography, and design.
The new course, Theater 1, explores all aspects of theatrical performance and production, and emphasizes creativity and collaboration. Students learn basic skills like acting and directing, but also focus on commonly unseen work, like lighting, sound, and costume design. Additionally, students learn specific techniques, such as memorization, theater terminology, and public speaking.
Students in the class are not required to be in the after-school drama program, as the class features interactive activities and performances. However, they are highly encouraged to, which has connected classroom learning with extracurricular activities and grown the theater program in the process.
Students have expressed excitement about the new class. “I think it is bringing new opportunities for students who want to try something new,” says freshman Savannah Mango.
The KHS administration shares this enthusiasm. “I am really excited for what Mrs. Yates will bring to the theater class, as well as the theatrical performances for the school, such as the fall drama and spring musical,” says Principal Jennifer Oluwole.
Yates, who was hired last spring for the position of theater teacher, is equally eager about the program’s future. “I am so excited to expand the theater program at Kinnelon and have felt so welcomed by everyone! I encourage all students to try theater, even if they have no experience! It’s a wonderful community of students where you will learn new skills and might discover a new passion!” said Yates.
The 2025 fall drama, The Great Gatsby, will feature both students in the class and in the after-school drama club. Come support the theater program on Nov. 13, 14, and 15!
