As the school year begins and the weather cools, students trade summer clothes for hoodies and sweatpants while balancing schoolwork and extracurriculars. When autumn arrives in Kinnelon, a variety of seasonal activities provide opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment outside the classroom.
Apple picking is a popular way to spend a crisp fall afternoon, surrounded by colorful leaves and fresh air. “I like to go apple picking because you get to eat apples,” said freshman Rayna Javed. There, visitors can sample different varieties, such as Granny Smith, Honey Crisp, or Empire, and take home fresh apples or some apple cider. This activity offers both a social outing and a chance to enjoy a taste of the season.

Pumpkin picking is another favorite fall tradition, specifically for those who are interested in carving or decorating. Local pumpkin patches near Kinnelon, such as Brookhollows Barnyard Pumpkin Patch, in Boonton Township, or Fairfield Farms & Greenhouses, in Wayne, provide seasonal fun. Freshman Nada Almosbeh said, “I like pumpkin picking because it’s a fun thing to do with friends and family.” Admission typically ranges from zero to $20, and many offer activities such as hay riding, corn mazes, and farm animals to feed.
Pumpkin painting also helps capture the Halloween spirit. “Sometimes I like to paint pumpkins,” said freshman Olivia Epstein. Setting up a small gathering with friends, where everyone decorates their own pumpkin, can be an enjoyable activity. Online inspiration, such as Pinterest, can offer ideas, making decorating an entertaining and rewarding experience.
Showing up to football games is another way to show school spirit and spend time with friends. Whether standing in the student section, cheering on the football team, or performing on the sidelines, students work together to build excitement.
With so many local activities available, Kinnelon offers opportunities for both relaxation and entertainment.
