KHS has introduced new theater electives, creating exciting opportunities for students interested in the arts. The addition of these classes will expand the school’s academic and extracurricular programs, giving students more ways to explore their creativity and self-expression.
Three new courses form the theater program: Introduction to Theater, Technical Theater, and Advanced Theater Honors. Each class is made for different experience levels, allowing all students to build their skills and try something new without pressure.
Introduction to Theater is a semester-long course open to grades 9 to 12. This class focuses on the basics of performance, including acting, directing, playwriting, and improvisation. Savannah Yates, the teacher of all three courses, describes this class as a “crash course on all things theater.” This gives students a chance to explore multiple areas in a fun and interactive way. The course emphasizes creativity and collaboration while helping students gain confidence on stage.
This sense of community is one of the main reasons the new theater electives are so important, as they increase connection, collaboration, and expression in a friendly environment.
Technical Theater offers a completely different experience by focusing on behind-the-scenes work. Students can expect to learn about lighting, sound, costumes, set design, props, and hair and makeup. The class is project-based and hands-on, allowing students to work with real equipment and design elements used in school productions. According to Yates, “This course helps students turn creative ideas into real stage designs through practical experience.”
Advanced Theater Honors is a full-year course for students in grades 10 to 12 who want to take their theater journey more seriously. For this course, a prerequisite is required, as this class is more focused and in-depth than the other courses. Students may specialize in acting or technical design while building a professional portfolio. Topics may include musical theater, stage combat, digital design, and audition techniques. Leadership and independent creative work are also important parts of this course.
The goal of these new electives is to give students a variety of opportunities to grow in different areas of theater. Yates said, “This program was expanded because of the increase in student interest, especially in technical and advanced work.”
The classes are designed to challenge students and help develop stronger artistic skills both in the classroom and on stage. Theater education can provide much more than just performance experience. Students develop skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. These abilities can improve performance in other classes, especially presentations, writing, and group projects.
In addition, theater also plays an important role in building confidence and communication skills. It allows students to express themselves outside the classroom, connect with others, and develop emotion. These benefits contribute to a more positive school experience and help students grow both academically and socially.
Overall, the addition of theater electives at Kinnelon High School shows a large step in expanding creative opportunities. With a variety of classes available, students can explore interests, build valuable skills, and become part of a growing theater program.
