On Saturday, Mar. 7th, the first rivalry game of the 2025-2026 season between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils takes place at the Devils’ home arena, The Prudential Center.
The Rangers and Devils have been rivals for over 40 years, with games marked by fights not only on the ice but in the stands, foul language from fans, and objects thrown onto the ice during heated moments. These are the types of games that get fans on the edge of their seats, ready to stand up and cheer for a game-winning goal.
The Devils are ranked 25th in the league with a record of 33 wins, 31 losses, and 2 ties, and the Rangers are 28th in the league with a record of 28 wins, 30 losses, and 8 ties. The game brought the Devils’ streak to four wins in a row, while the Rangers struggled, falling to 4 wins, 12 losses, and 3 ties since early January.
In the first period of the game, the Devils’ alternate captain, Jesper Bratt, scored the first goal with a snap shot, which was then later followed by goals from Rangers players Will Borgen and Vladislav Gavrikov—putting the final score of the first period at 2-1 Rangers.
The second period started with Devils’ alternate captain Jack Hughes tying up the score 2-2, but was then quickly lost when Rangers player Will Cuylle scored with a slap shot.

By the third and final period, Devils’ Captain Nico Hischier scored with a wrist shot. By this time, everyone’s on the edge of their seats, and Rangers fans are quickly devastated when Devils second alternate captain Jack Hughes scores two more goals, earning a hat trick, a four-game winning streak, and a 6-3 win against the New York Rangers.
After the game, Devils fans celebrated the victory against the Rangers by showering Olympic star Jack Hughes with “U.S.A” chants following his hat trick and praising Nico Hischier’s key efforts. Fans were ecstatic over the four-game win streak and applauded the team’s energetic and dominant performance on home ice.
Rangers fans described their loss to the Devils as embarrassing and disgraceful, citing poor five-on-five play and a lack of scoring.

The Rangers’ head coach, Mike Sullivan, in a post-game interview, said: “The team lacked ‘juice’ from their power play, while defenders adjusted to lineup changes.” He then followed up his statement by saying: “The Devils gained significant momentum through their penalty kill and power play, whereas we [The Rangers] failed to generate any in the loss.”
The Devils’ captain, Nico Hischier, was also interviewed after the game with a proud statement: “It’s great to beat the Rangers, always. Doesn’t matter where. Doesn’t matter when.”
Alternate captain Jack Hughes was also interviewed after the win and was asked how he felt about the stands cheering U.S.A: “You know it’s funny, after the Olympics I got Rangers fans cheering for me.” He was then later asked what brings the best out of him when playing against the Rangers:” When you look at the schedule, you’re looking for Rangers games. Devils Rangers, great rivalry, great fanbases. Fun to go to The Garden, fun here, lotta Rangers fans, lotta red too, Devils fans. I enjoy playing in these games, a game you circle on the calendar, and you want to be a part of.”
This shows a clear reflection that these are games that not only the fans love to see but also that the players love to participate in.
Devils’ goalie Jacob Markstrom had 17 saves out of 20 shots on goal, and stars of the game included Jack Hughes (3 goals), Nico Hischier (1 goal), and Jesper Bratt (1 goal, 2 assists)
Rangers’ goalie Jonathan Quick had 29 saves out of 35 shots on goal, and stars of the game included Will Borgen (1 goal), Vladislav Gavrikov (1 goal), and Will Cuylle (1 goal).
